Transforming school libraries – Day 4

I have watched the presentation about Social Bookmarking – nice to have another one with a voice narrating. I think that I learn a lot from this kind. I really like VoiceThread in particular as the commenting is nice!

Anyway, back to the presentation. Again, I don’t think that I found out a lot of new stuff as I have been using both Delicious and Diigo for some time. But it did remind me of some things and introduced me to some new terms. I have favourited it on SlideShare and will return to it at a later date to think about it some more. I was interested in the RISAL project and will certainly explore that more when I have the time.

The second presentation : “The Os of Web 2.0: Openness, Originality and Others” is in PDf format and I have downloaded it and printed it out to read. I find it difficult to read long articles like this these days as they take a lot of concentration and I don’t really get the space and time for that – at school, everything is very busy; at home – well, mayhem would be a good word! Also, I am not used to it – I think that I am out of practise these days.

Anyway, I have begun a bubbl.us to show my learning network (I have used this before to create a sitemap for my Library Online site – although this needs updating).

    Anne

I’m smiling because last December I locked myself away for a day … only opening the door for cups-a-tea and sandwiches … and built a mindmap to visualise my own personal learning network.

This has turned out to be a day very well spent as it meant I put some order into my normal state of always trying to catch up.
I still don’t get through everything …. but at least I now know what I’m not doing (ummm … does that make sense?)

Anyway .. the results can be seen at

    Have fun

Gosh, Chris – yours is amazing! I need to spend more time on mine to get it to that standard. But there a re so man y other things to do on this course.

    Hi Anne
Thanks for doing the PLN map and for sharing it. It was a good ‘aha’ moment for me seeing the ‘librarians I admire’ category because this is exactly where I get most value in my PLN. It’s so easy to fixate on the technology (and I love the technology – it certainly makes keeping in touch with people easier) but it’s definitely the people that make a PLN.

Professional associations are also important for me, but there is an interesting shift in Australia with less and less teachers joining – particularly new teachers. Is this the case in UK do you know?

I certainly agree with the so much to do in this course, and far too much to read. Well done for managing to blog each day thus far. Are you taking time out from work?
    All the best, Pru

    Hi Anne,
I just wanted to agree with you about the use of voicethread. I find it a very ‘cosy’ learning environment when I can hear the presenter and other people’s voice comments. If found the same when I joined the K-12 online conference last year. Now I’ll have to explore the potential of slide share with voice commentary. I’ve only begun to dip into this conference but am finding it fascinating. Thanks for your blog – really a good summary of the sessions.

Thanks for your comments! Yes, I am doing some of this at work, between other things. Then logging on to my laptop in the evening and writing the blog posts. I shall miss it when it is over, but at least I will be able to get on with my “other” life!

I really enjoyed your thoughtful reflections on the Day 4 papers and also seeing your PLN. I felt a strong resonance with your diagram and Pru’s comment about ‘Librarians I admire’ as some of my best learning experiences come from my colleagues in my own library and also in other school libraries around the world. This conference is a demonstration of this too, how we can sharpen each others’ skills and open each others’ eyes further and wider.
    Cheers,
    Elizabeth

I think bubbl.us is a great tool, and I love the idea of mapping out a PLN that way – things to take away with me….
ps can you tell that today is my ‘light’ day where I can catch up with everything???
